39. Executives! - You will get a package too and then what?

Why Personal Branding is for Executives too

Why Personal Branding is for Executives too

My dad took a package at 55, he had worked for the same corporation as a high level executive for over 30 years.  He was done, he wanted out, he wanted to become a coach and fulfill his purpose.

I am talking 20 years ago…  he was a pioneer in coaching, people back then thought it was something like therapy.

He tapped into his large “corporate network” back then and you know what happened?

NOTHING.

He was alone.

Fast forward to many years later, he created his own company and is still working everyday today, as a High Performance Executive Coach changing lives for the better… but it took grit, hard work and perseverance.

The learning of this story?  It was a mistake to wait until AFTER he retired to start creating and establishing his Personal Brand, granted that back then, we didn’t even have the tools of Online Marketing and Social Media that are available to us today.

I believe that even as an Executive working in a corporation you can benefit from honing your own Personal Brand and here is why:

  1. Whether you like it or not, people will have an opinion about you.  You can’t control what people think of you, but you CAN influence it and manage your message.

  2. A STRONG Personal Brand will help you position yourself as a thought leader and an authority in your area of expertise.

  3. The visibility generated from your active positioning will help you broaden your network.

  4. Positioning your Personal Brand inside and outside of your company (on Social Media) can help you become more marketable as a leader.

When building your online Personal Brand as an Executive, here are some steps I would advise to follow:

  1. You have to build your Personal Brand online.  You can build your brand offline too, but if you want to create more impact, you have to position yourself online.

  2. Choose your niche of expertise, yes, you probably have different areas of knowledge, but ask yourself: What do I want to be known for?  And then focus.

  3. Connect and develop relationships from a place of authenticity by bringing your personality into the picture. Let people see the human inside your brand.

  4. You don’t have to be perfect.  One of the major concerns and misconceptions for executives is that they have to protect their perfect image and can’t allow themselves to make mistakes.  If you are able to share your learnings it will make you more relatable.

  5. Own your uniqueness.  Your content needs to be a mix of your personality, your expertise, your beliefs, your values as a leader and your story.  THIS, will make you unique and will help you stand out in the market.

  6. Find your voice.  Sometimes it takes time, but you will realize people will connect more with you when you find it.  You will realize that you have a lot to say.

  7. Your visual brand matters. The images you share of yourself help people put a “face to a name”, they will help you stay top of mind and connect with your audience. Make sure to use professional Branding photos that represent the image you want to convey.
