75. The motivation behind starting a business

I want to share with you a story that brought me to where I am today.

My grandma had to quick school and couldn’t finish primary school.   She became a seamstress, self-taught and a very gifted one at that.  With other opportunities, she could have been a fashion designer.  But she didn’t have those opportunities. She struggled to make ends meet and raise two daughters on her own.

My mom couldn’t finish high-school.  It was hard to make ends meet and she quit school to start working very young, she was still a minor.

I grew up with these two women at home.   They bore in my head, in my subconscious and in my heart constantly and  continuously that I HAD to study, I HAD to have a career and I HAD to be independent.

Since I started working, I have only stopped for three years when my second son was born and we were as a family on a foreign assignment, but then I went back to school to become a photographer.

This experience with my mom and my grandmother is the reason why I am so passionate to work with women becoming successful and independent.

I have a confession to make…(breathe)...

When I see women, who are unable to make their own decisions, financial or otherwise without consulting their husband, uff! It triggers something in me… I think it is really engraved in my subconscious (thanks to my mom and grandma) that I just have this urge to help them become independent.

Ok, I understand it might not be everyone’s need or wish, and I don’t go around “pushing” people…

But for those who want to and are committed, I am excited to help.

Steve Jobs said:

“I'm convinced that about half of what separates successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.” It is so hard. You put so much of your life into this thing. There are such rough moments in time that I think most people give up. I don't blame them. It's really tough and it consumes your life. (...) Unless you have a lot of passion about this, you're not going to survive."

I believe that the more that you understand the underlying reasons that motivate you to do something, like being an entrepreneur, the better you can successfully accomplish it.
