41. Why is Brand Recognition important for your Personal Brand

Brand Recognition

I am going to describe five logos, without actually showing you a photo.

Let’s see how many can you guess?

First.   A (usually red) round fruit with a bite.  You know, the one Snow White chokes on.

Second.  It is a white “F” inside a blue square.

Third.  The sports brand with a simple check for a logo.

Fourth. The big yellow arches.

Five. A red rectangle (in the shape of a TV) with a simple white triangle in the middle, like a play button.

So, moment of truth, how many did you guess?  My husband guessed four.

Brand Recognition refers to how much people are capable of recognizing a brand just by looking at a logo, colors or a tagline, for example.

Now you have brands that are centered around an individual, like you can’t help thinking of Richard Branson when you see the red and white Virgin logo, right?

When we are talking about a Personal Brand, when we are talking about your Personal Brand, YOU become part of those “recognizable visual assets” of your brand.

Can people recall seeing you before?

Now, why is Brand recognition important even as a small entrepreneur, even when you don’t have millions to invest in brand recognition?

Remember, you don’t need to be widely known to have a profitable business, you just need to be well known and have a solid community.

  1. Brand recognition helps to reduce price sensitivity.  As people learn to trust the brand, they are more likely to make a decision based on the perceived value and expected outcome (product or service) than on the price alone.

  2. Wakes up the desire for that brand to be the one that resolves your problem.

Think about this.  Apple computers are popular amongst creatives, because they have positioned themselves to be more intuitive and geared towards artistic professions.  And they are much more expensive too.  Is the difference in price due to cost?  Maybe, or maybe not.

Is it true that they are really better for creatives?  Honestly, I truly don’t know anymore.  I haven’t used anything else since I started my business years ago.  However, I am willing to pay a premium price to get one… and yes, I know many others who would too.

Is it a need? Or a desire?

So, how do you increase your Brand Recognition?

Brand recognition is achieved through FREQUENCY, REACH and CONSISTENCY.

Which means that:

  1. People need to see you frequently, as in 7 to 8 times, to really start being AWARE that you exist

  2. Increased reach, meaning more people need to know about your brand

  3. Consistency, meaning everything needs to be consistent to be recognizable, from the usage of your visual branding elements (logo, colors, fonts, tagline and even YOU!) to your brand message and values.
