56. Should you wear bright colors or busy patterns in your business photos?

Can I wear bright colors or busy patterns in my business photos? - a client asks.

My answer is: “It depends”

Let’s say you are getting headshots done.  Headshots are relatively limited in terms of posing, as we are basically capturing only the face and torso.

If the goal is to make your photos stand out, then there are only a few things you can do and clothing is one of them.

Clients are often unsure “what goes or not” in business photos.

Depending on the business industry, you might have more "creative and style freedom" than others.   As I work with lawyers or accountants, for example areas, here in Germany, that tend to be more serious, formal and traditional and often want to convey these qualities in their photos.

Other areas of business that are more creative or trendy, might allow for more “room to play” with style.

Unless you are someone who actually only wears black and white, and this is your style, my advice is always to bring an accent color.

The “typical black and white” business outfit is of course good, it will always make you look professional, and remember that your images need to reflect your style.

Now if you DO wear brighter colors, but don't feel so confident on whether to bring them to a business shoot, my answer is YES!

I believe there is always a way to bring some accent of color that makes your images vibrant and makes them stand out.  It is always a choice and style of how bold you want it to be.  It could be a blouse or a shirt, some jewelry, a scarf or a handkerchief, maybe even a jacket or a blouse.

If you are a business owner and you want to create Brand Images that reflect your brand guide, it makes sense to use colors that fit your branding.

Not really sure?

Do you feel it’s a bit overwhelming to decide on your own?

This is the reason I offer a  pre-consult meeting (or call), where I can advise you regarding the image or message you want to communicate.

I wrote another article where I share advice on what to wear to a branding shoot. Read the article here.
