The Role of Social Media in your Business

Many of us shy away from social media. Me too.

Only a couple of years ago, I preferred  to hide in my little corner of the World. But then came a time in which it was inevitable.

Think about it, many years ago, you couldn’t do business without having a business card. Now?  I don’t know about you, but mine pile up, people simply find me in different ways.

How about a website?  It is a GIVEN, that is nowadays your “business card”, it is where people go to get your information and see what you have to offer.

Social Media?  It is a tool, like any other tool.  I always tell my clients that it is one of the many tools that we can use to do business, and yes, it is not the only one, an important one at that, but not the only one.

It is undeniable, way too many people who are interested in what you have to say, or who need what you have to offer are “in there”, maybe not all…true...but many.

And sometimes your services or products like my photography side of the business have a regional scope, but others, like my mentoring, are location independent… imagine the possibilities, imagine how many people you can reach that are further away.

So how can you get people to know you, to be aware that you exist as a business, as a brand, as a personal brand?

Well, Social Media is definitely a tool that can help with that, as I said...But wait!! It is NOT the only one.

Here is where many people go wrong, thinking that selling on Social Media will make their business successful.

Ok, maybe some can get away with that for some time, but not everyone can build a business with ONLY Social Media.

There are other parts to the online and Business Strategy. Social Media is…well, Social.

Think of your potential clients as someone you meet at a party.

At a party (remember the old times?) you would meet someone and strike up a conversation, and with some people you realize that you have stuff in common, so you get into a deeper conversation.  And there are occasions in which you even exchange numbers because you want to continue to be friends (or something else, but I’m going with only friendship here).

Social Media is somewhat similar.  It is a place where you shake hands (digitally speaking, of course!) and you start conversations.  And with some people you might “hit it off” and realize that you have things in common and might continue to grow that connection and relationship.

Some of these people learn to trust you and happen to be in need of what your business has to offer and might become customers.

However, don’t forget that Social Media is only at the front of your Business Strategy.  Here is another article to highlight the parts on why it IS important read here

Social Media should not be your entire Business Strategy… sounds complicated or overwhelming?  I know, but it doesn’t have to be. There are ways of simplifying so that also us, solopreneurs or small business owners, can do it.
